There’s nothing meagre about Omega

Not all Omega-3 supplements are the same: read our guide to the what and the why of Omega-3.

In a recent blog post, From Fat to Fiction, we explained that not all fats are the same. There are different types of fat that affect the body in different ways. In that post we touched upon a particularly vital fatty acid called omega-3. Just as not all fats in general are the same so it is with omega-3.

There are in fact 3 kinds of omega-3: the plant-based ALA found in such things as flax and chia seeds, and two animal based omegas, DHA and EPA found in fish oil.

The body and brain needs both DHA and EPA. ALA is associated with such health benefits as countering inflammatory reactions, protection against auto-immune and cardio-vascular disease.

It’s important to note though that ALA cannot replace the animal-based omega-3. Although the body does have an ability to convert ALA to EPA/DHA it’s rather limited – a mere 3.8% for DHA and 6% for EPA. And even then, this conversion will only happen if specific enzymes are present.

It’s therefore best to combine plant and animal omegas both in the diet and via supplementation. That way DHA/EPA can do their thing and ALA can follow its groove without need to rely on this weak conversion process which can leave the body deficient in EPA/DHA.

So if you’re not a fish eater then you may well benefit from fish oil and omega-3 supplementation.

Super Omega-3 benefits:

Now, having established the importance of all 3 types of omega-3 let’s take a look at just some of the far from meagre benefits of omega-3. Below is the selection of articles regarding health benefits of omega-3:

Here at Health4all we have a range of supplements to help get your daily Omega-3 intake.

Our krill oil capsules contain 3 important components: Omega-3 fatty acids similar to those in fish oil; phosopholipid-derived fatty acids notably choline (PLFA) and the antioxidant astaxanthin.

Our cod liver oil contains large quantities of the crucial EPA and DHA fatty acids as well as vitamin A and D as does our Omega 3 fish oil softgels.

To top up your ALA levels try our flax seed oil supplement containing alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3), linoleic acid (Omega-6) and oleic acid (Omega-9). The ALA in flaxseed oil can hamper the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – responsible for shrinking hair follicles. ALA, Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), and Oleic Acid all inhibit 5-Alpha reductase. No need to get your hair off then!
